NASA Moon Tree
Livermore is now home to a NASA Moon Tree!
We are thrilled to announce that Livermore has been honored to receive a NASA Moon Tree. Thank you to our partners at Quest Science for securing this special tree for our community!
Watch a short video about the Moon Tree and the naming contest!
(please note that the contest has concluded.)
What is a Moon Tree?
Moon Trees have a unique and fascinating origin. These trees are grown from seeds that traveled to the moon and back, making them symbols of exploration, discovery, and scientific achievement. NASA's Moon Tree initiative aims to inspire communities and highlight the connection between space exploration and environmental stewardship.
Our Moon Tree is a giant sequoia that journeyed as a seed around the moon on the Artemis 1 mission aboard the Orion spacecraft in 2022. The seed was carefully nurtured into a sapling after its remarkable lunar voyage, and we are now ready to welcome it into our community.
Where is the Moon Tree?
The Moon Tree will find its permanent home in the fall, right by the Civic Center Library. This location was chosen to ensure the tree is accessible to everyone, becoming a living landmark for all to enjoy. In the meantime, the Moon Tree is in the capable hands of Jacquie Williams-Courtright, the owner of Alden Lane Nursery.
