The City is typically responsible for sidewalks adjacent to City facilities and other locations maintained through agreements or where otherwise required by law. Since 1941, under the California Streets and Highways Code property owners are generally responsible for maintaining sidewalks next to their property.

• Commercial and multi-family properties are generally responsible for maintaining all sidewalks adjacent to their properties, except curb ramps. 

The City is initiating a one-time sidewalk project to repair privately maintained sidewalks by sidewalk slicing at no cost to the property owners. To learn more about the project, visit the project page: Sidewalk Repair (SM202502)

Depending on the severity of the sidewalk lifts, sidewalks may be repaired using either:

• Concrete slicing (grinding): Uneven concrete is ground down to remove trip hazards. Most sidewalk lifts of up to approximately two inches can be repaired using this method.
• Sidewalk removal and replacement: Larger sidewalk lifts or damaged panels that cannot be repaired by grinding are removed and replaced with new concrete.
