At the Special meeting Thursday, Aug. 20, the Livermore City Council voted 4-0, with Council Member Evan Branning absent, to cancel the uncontested races for mayor and City Council District 1 and appoint the only qualified candidate for each office. John Marchand was appointed mayor, and Branning was appointed District 1 council member.
The City Council District 2 race will remain on the Tuesday, Nov. 3, ballot. Two candidates qualified for the District 2 seat, and voters in that district will select their representative in the November election.
With the Mayor and District 1 races canceled, the Mayoral race will not appear on Livermore ballots, and the District 1 race will not appear on ballots for voters in that district. Canceling the two uncontested races is expected to save the City at least $250,000 in election costs.
The candidate nomination period closed Friday, Aug. 7. At that time, one candidate had qualified for mayor, one candidate had qualified for District 1, and two candidates had qualified for District 2. Following the close of the nomination period, the City Clerk's Office published a notice of the uncontested races and scheduled the Special City Council meeting for consideration of the appointments.
