Scam Alert: Livermore Man Loses Thousands to Scammers
On June 23, a Livermore man in his 60s reported receiving a phone call that appeared to come from the Livermore Police Department. The callers falsely claimed to represent both the Livermore Police Department and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, telling the victim he needed to purchase a “bond certificate” to protect himself and the government for immigration-related reasons.
The scammers also communicated with the victim through WhatsApp. Believing the call was legitimate, the victim withdrew thousands of dollars from his bank account and sent the money to the scammers.
Remember:
The Livermore Police Department will NEVER ask you to send money, purchase gift cards, wire funds, or buy cryptocurrency.Scammers can “spoof” phone numbers, making it appear that a call is coming from a trusted agency or business.If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the organization directly using a verified phone number.Talk with family members, friends, and especially older adults about scams.Please help us spread the word. A few minutes of awareness can prevent someone from losing their money.
