Livermore City Attorney Jason Alcala to Retire After More Than Two Decades of Service

Post Date:06/06/2025

City Attorney Jason Alcala has announced his planned retirement later this summer after more than 21 years of dedicated service to the City of Livermore. Alcala has served as the City's chief legal advisor since 2014 and has played a key role in guiding the City through major legal, operational, and development initiatives.

"Livermore is a special place. It has been a privilege serving the Livermore community," said Alcala. "I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such extraordinary council members, staff, and community members who are truly committed to the city's quality of life and to doing the right thing–even when it is hard."

Alcala began his tenure with the city in 2004 as an Assistant City Attorney. He was promoted to City Attorney in 2014, providing legal counsel and representation for a wide range of projects, including the redevelopment of Livermore's downtown, the Bankhead Theater rescue, the Isabel/I-580 Interchange, and the Livermore Premium Outlets. He also helped steer the city through significant challenges, including a 2019 cyberattack and the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I believe I was the right attorney at the right time to help Livermore," Alcala reflected. "Together with a team of strategic problem-solvers, we've worked to preserve public resources and the community's trust in local government."

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the USC Gould School of Law, Alcala has practiced municipal law for 25 years. Prior to joining Livermore, he held positions with the cities of Chino, Coachella, and Thousand Oaks, and also represented private clients in litigation and transactional matters.

Mayor John Marchand acknowledged Alcala's impact on the City, stating, "I truly appreciate Jason's dedication to Livermore. His tireless work has helped the City succeed where others might falter. Though legal work is often behind the scenes, the results of his leadership are visible throughout the community."

Vice-Mayor Evan Branning added, "Jason's approach to identifying and managing legal issues has been invaluable. His work ensures that our complex projects are done right, done well, and serve our community."

City officials have begun the recruitment process for Livermore's next City Attorney, with a successor expected to be in place before Alcala's departure.
